The term Pianola has over the years become the generic name for player pianos.
The player piano is a self-playing piano, (also a first class piano that can be played manually like any other) containing a pneumatic mechanism that plays on the piano action via perforated paper piano rolls. The rise of the player piano grew with the rise of the mass-produced piano in the house and the sheet music industry explosion of the late 19th and early 20th century.

Many of the piano rolls are authorised copies of actual piano artists, including Gershwin, Paderewski, Scot Joplin and many Jazz pianists. The piano rolls are still manufactured today offering a mix of music from classical - rock & pop, Abba, Beatles, Elvis Elton John etc. to-jazz & swing- all the modern shows i.e. Andrew Lloyd Weber's Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserable by Mackintosh.
